Cagney and Lacey is the story of two women cops that are partners, as well as the first women to serve in the NYPD's 14th precinct. Sergeant Christine Cagney(Sharon Gless) is a hardworking, career-minded single woman, while Detective Mary Beth Lacey(Tyne Daly) is married to construction worker Harvey(John Karlen) with two boys, Harvey Jr.(Tony La Torre) and Michael(Troy Slaten); she would give birth to a daughter, Alice Christine, in season 5. Working with them in the precinct is Lt. Bert Samuels(Al Waxman), Det. Paul LaGuardia(Sidney Clute), Det. Marcus Petrie(Carl Lumbly), and Det. Victor Isbecki(Martin Kove). Also in a recurring role in the early seasons is Christine's father, Sergeant Charlie Cagney(Dick O'Neill), a former NYPD police officer who was also an alcoholic. In the original TV movie, Loretta Swit of MASH fame took on the role of Christine Cagney. Meg Foster played the role in all 6 season 1 episodes, before Sharon Gless stepped into the role for the remainder of the series.

When Mary Beth goes into labor while Harvey is out of town, Chris must race her to the hospital before the baby is born, which is not so easy when Christine's car breaks down and she cannot seem to find a ride. Finally, a nice truck driver drives them to the hospital, and Harvey shows up just in time. Mary Beth gives birth to a daughter, Alice Christine.

Chris finally decides to go to AA after a confrontation with Mary Beth.
