This sitcom revolved around ex-baseball player Sam Malone(Ted Danson) running a bar in downtown Boston. The staff included waitresses Diane Chambers(Shelley Long) and Carla Tortelli(Rhea Perlman), along with bartender Coach(Nicholas Colosanto), who was later succeeded by Woody Boyd(Woody Harrelson). The customers included Norm Peterson(George Wendt), mailman Cliff Clavin(John Ratzenberger), and psychiatrist Frasier Crane(Kelsey Grammar, who got his own spinoff, Frasier). The most notable romance was between Sam and Diane, who dated on and off and almost got married a few times, including the series finale, which brought Shelley Long back for the first time in 5 years.

Diane Chambers walks into the Cheers bar with her fiancé Sumner Sloane. Sumner leaves Diane at the bar to get his wedding ring from his ex-wife. Diane sits in the bar and learns about the other people there: Sam is an ex-baseball player, Carla is a single mother of 4, etc. Sumner comes back and says he couldn't get the ring, then leaves again when his ex-wife has a change of heart. Sam and Diane argue, after which she calls the airport and is told that "Mr. and Mrs. Sloane" have already left. Feeling pity for her, Sam gives a heartbroken Diane a job at the bar.

In part 2, Sam and Janet grow closer, but Janet is jealous of Diane and orders him to fire her, but Diane resigns first after overhearing. In part 3, following a scene at her press conference, Janet dumps Sam. Later that night, Sam calls someone on the phone and proposes.

Norm brings a raw, unfrozen turkey, which takes forever to thaw while the other food is cold. Diane shows up, unannounced and uninvited, and says she ran away from her dinner when she was forced to dress as a Pilgrim. Carla and Norm blame each other for the frozen turkey and cold dinner. Finally, an all-out food fight ensues.

She brings with her her "husband" Reed, and Sam asks Rebecca(Kirstie Alley) to pose as his wife, but both schemes are exposed when Rebecca accepts a proposal from another man, and Reed's boyfriend shows up, accusing him of cheating with Diane. Diane admits to Sam that she did not return to him as promised, but agrees when Sam asks her to give their relationship another try. They leave on a plane but have second thoughts and amicably part ways when the plane turns back. Meanwhile, Cliff is promoted, Woody becomes councilman and gives Norm a job, and Rebecca gets married. Norm says he knew Sam would back, that he would always come back to his "one true love": the bar. The final scene of the show has Sam walking through the bar, telling a knocking patron, "Sorry, we're closed.", and turning out the lights.
