Based on the memoirs of Earl Hamner, Jr. , this 1970s drama focuses on the Waltons of Walton's Mountain in rural Virginia. John(Ralph Waite) and Olivia(Michael Learned) were the parents of 7 children, who in the beginning ranged in age from 17 to 6: John-Boy(Richard Thomas), Jason(Jon Walmsley), Mary Ellen(Judy Norton) ,Erin(Mary McDonough), Ben(Eric Scott), Jim Bob(David Harper), and Elizabeth(Kami Cotler). Also helping out was Grandma Esther (Ellen Corby) and Grandpa Zeb Walton(Will Geer).

Olivia contracts polio one February morning. John-Boy refuses to accept that his mother will never walk again. He seeks out a doctor at the University of Virginia, who offers some experimental treatment. Olivia tries the exercises, but gives up and resigns herself to being paralyzed when they don't work. However, right before Easter, a miracle happens: Olivia hears Elizabeth calls out to her in her sleep and gets out of bed without thinking. She is able to attend the Easter sunrise service with her family.

Olivia is overjoyed to learn she is pregnant again. John is skeptical that it will be hard on her, and worries about money. Elizabeth is upset that she will no longer be the baby of the family, but grows excited at the prospect of having new baby sister. But it is not to be, since Olivia ends up having a miscarriage.

Season 4, Episode 18 "The Burn-Out"
When the house suffers severe damage in a fire,the children must be split up while Grandpa, John, and John-Boy make repairs. Of all the children, only Elizabeth is scared to return home. Meanwhile, John-Boy restarts his manuscript(which he lost in the fire), Ben cuts school to go fishing, and Grandpa enlightens the residents of a boardinghouse that he's staying in with his stories.
